Honors College

My Experience at UWO

scroll

For the Senior capstone, I decided to write an Honors Thesis rather than take a class.  I knew from the get-go that I was going to write about development in Africa, but I wanted to go further than what I already knew in order to keep myself interested on a two semester project.  I have always been a big advocate for human rights (in whatever form they might take in different cultures), so when I came across literature on public health, I was immediately hooked.  My topic ended up being something no one was really talking about, and that got me even MORE excited (well not for the people who are literally DYING from NCDs), because I really hope to one day contribute to global scholarship, especially as it relates to Africa.  Literally my dream is to be quoted in someone else's work.  Hey, you gotta start somewhere.

I've learned so much through my experience in the Honors College, including finding my passion for the topics in my Honors Thesis project.  You get out of college what you put into it, and I am confident that I am leaving UWO having left everything on the table.

I loved attending UW Oshkosh and being apart of the Honors College.  The honors classes I took were always thought-provoking, interesting, and made me excited to learn more about new topics.  As an International Studies and Political Science major, I enjoyed a wide interdisciplinary education that improved my research ability, public speaking, interpersonal skills, and global knowledge.  I was able to engage in research-intensive projects such as my Honors Thesis that focused on non-communicable disease in Africa and the relation to global health governance.

The first class I took was Honors Philosophy of Religion.  We analyzed the philosophical questions surrounding Christianity, and the professor (hi Dr. Carlin!) gave us a lot of creative freedom in both discussions and in our projects.  This class is what got me excited about the Honors College (though, it was just a program back then) so I continued on with four more honors classes:

  • Honors 275: Culture Connection

  • Honors History 216: History of the American Left

  • Honors Religious Studies110: World Religions

  • Honors IS Senior Seminar 403
